Key Stages - what is expected?
With reference to writing in particular, the national curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

The programmes for study at key stages 1 and 2 focus on:
  • Spelling
  • Handwriting
  • Composition 

Pupils must be competent in these three aspects.

 The chart below shows what punctuation must be used to achieve the various levelling standards in KS2 writing.

To achieve a level 4 in Writing your child must be able to:

  • Write in a lively and coherent style
  • Use a range of writing styles confidently
  • Use ambitious and adventurous vocabulary/ language 
  • Organise ideas for purpose and reader
  • Use full stops, question marks and commas accurtely
  • Can write in a clear, neat and accurate cursive script
  • Can use a range of sophisticated connectives (although, however, nevertheless)
  • Can use or attempt to use paragraphs
  • Can use grammatically complex sentences (including subordinate clauses)
  • Can use apostrophes and inverted commas accurately
  • Select interesting ways to move a story or piece of writing forward
  • Develop ideas in creative and interesting ways

To achieve a level 5 in Writing your child must be able to:

  • Produce writing which is varied, interesting and thoughtful
  • Have well structured and organised writing pieces (including range of conventions for layout)
  • Use formal and informal styles in writing
  • Select from a wide range of known imaginative and ambitious vocabulary
  • Use paragraphs consistently and appropriately
  • Use pronouns to avoid repetition of character name or objects/places
  • Confidently select from a range of sentence structures for effect
  • Use a wide range of punctuation (commas, apostrophes, dashes, ellipses)
  • Write in fluent, clear and joined script
  • Use a range of narrative techniques interweaving when appropriate (Description, Action, Dialogue)
  • Use a range of literary features for effect (figurative language)
  • Experiment with punctuation to separate clauses (semi colons, colons, dashes)
